A fan clutch is a thermostatic device that exists as an integral component of a certain automotive cooling system. When the engine is cool or even at normal operating temperature, the fan clutch partially disengages the engine mechanically driven radiator cooling fan.
On engines with belt driven cooling fans, a fan clutch is often used to save energy and reduce noise. The fan clutch disengages slows or disengages the engines cooling fan when extra cooling isn’t needed. The fan pulls air through the radiator and air conditioning condenser when the vehicle isn’t moving fast enough.

The fan clutch is the center piece of the fan blade which bolts on to the shaft that comes from the engine.
